Review of Bad Lieutenant (1992) by Aaron G — 29 Oct 2007
Maverick director Abel Ferrara's seething character study of a New York detective grappling with his inner demons. Keitel deserved an Oscar for his performance as the cross-bearing junkie cop, but the content and tone of this gritty, urban tragedy is certainly not what the Academy would've openly endorsed.
This is American independent cinema at it's absolute best, a tale of redemption and salvation that lingers long after the final frame, and stands as Ferrara's undisputed masterpiece set amid the bowels of his native New York.
