Review of Backbeat (1994) by Christopher N — 10 Jan 2010
By all accounts, this is a fairly accurate picture of how things were for the young Beatles in Hamburg. The really great thing , though, is the casting- the actors all look and sound their parts, but the genius is deeper: the band hired to play this music, which was a pantheon of alternative rock stars (Dave Grohl, Thurston Moore, Mike Mills, Dave Pirner, Greg Dhuli and Don Flemming) absolutely nail the energy of the "atomic beat".
In addition, nearly every guitar is perfectly cast, from Stu Sutcliffe's Hofner bass to Paul McCartney's Rosetti Solid 7, and the actors handling them are playing them correctly! There are a few minor errors with both, but they are mostly forgivable, save one: Paul sang "Long Tall Sally", not John; according to popular myth, that is why the real Sir Paul does not like this movie.
Oh yeah, that chick from Twin Peaks is in it, too.
