Review of Art and Craft (2014) by Amanda C — 17 Sep 2014
The story of Mark Landis is a facinating one. One of the most successful and prolific art forgers in history, he has also made no monetary gain from his talents instead donating his works to museums and collections across the country.
The filmmakers have used Landis to explore the line between art and craftsmanship as Landis' s works are just as accomplished as the originals. The film spends a bit too much time on the cop whose spent his career searching for Landis for what is essentially a victimless crime.
Much Moe interesting are the questions raised by the art experts interviewed about the validity of the originals when a copy that is indistinguishable is created. Is there still value in the original? Is there any value in the copy? There is no attempt to answer these questions but they do prompt an interesting discussion about the power of the original.
