Review of Antiviral (2012) by Katherine C — 12 Nov 2012
Just watched it at LEFFest and I even had the chance to attend a masterclass given by Brandon Cronenberg and Sarah Gadon after the screening of the film. A cold, satyric analysis about voyeurism and our obssession with celebrities, "Antiviral" is a great debut from a promising young director.
Although his father wasn't mentioned at the masterclass, his influence in "Antiviral" is pretty obvious. As David Cronenberg's first films, body horror is one of the main themes of the movie.
But "Antiviral" is actually pretty different from Cronenberg's earliest films. The recurring use of white, the intense and atmospheric music, the hand-held camera give us a modern feel, and in someway, introduces to a new generation the same kind of movie-making with which David Cronenberg provoked us 30 years ago.
Ironic, deeply physical, and very creative. Loved it.
