Review of Animal World (2018) by Alex C — 14 Aug 2018

This movie tries to be a lot of things, first a gamer-esque action movie, then a superhero movie where the protagonist envisions himself as a clown hero, then a Battle Royale-like game of survivor where the clown alter-ego from the beginning doesn't even get mentioned again.

From the trailer I thought it would be an action movie but I was indeed wrong. that was only a lie to trick you into watching. The story is very inconsistent, the style is very over-the-top. It seems that Director Yan just wanted to show off everything he could do without giving much coherence.

It might be a better movie if it trimmed much of the excess fat it carries. I will give the movie this - it's an interesting allegory on China's participation in international trade.
