Review of Angel on My Shoulder (1946) by Cody F — 14 Sep 2008
Aside from the rich dialogue and a few scenes of genuine sentiment, this film was pretty lame. The story starts out cool enough, with mobsters and murder and the devil, but it abruptly transitions into a backward adaptation of It's A Wonderful Life with family comedy and slapstick.
The acting was solid though. This is the first film I've seen with Paul Muni, and I enjoyed watching him. Claude Raines has done better work, but he was still awesome. I think the greatest flaw is that this kind of movie has been vastly improved upon many times since.
Plus when screenwriters fictionalize the supernatural or the unknown it usually turns out to be a laugh. For instance, Hell has a system and a process. It's just reaaallly hot and mundane, which apparently is eternal agonizing torture.
Ending was ridiculous.
