Review of Amigo (2011) by Mrclean V — 21 Feb 2011
It seemed weird to hear the Tagalog in the beginning (did they shoot this movie in sequence?) like the actors had a hard time wrapping their tongues around their lines. However, after 20 minutes, I settled down and began to enjoy the film. People here speak in Tagalog, English, Spanish and some Chinese dialect I don't recognize. Only the Spanish and Chinese are subtitled here.
I love what Sayles has done in depicting the drama (the change of colonial masters from Spanish to American) but setting it in a small barrio town. I also like the complications of trying to please Aguinaldo's Filipino rebels and the new American masters, with the town caught in between. Sayles managed to make a good drama that grounds people squarely in the period depicted, seasoned with some action and humor. Highly recommended.
