Yes, the film runs a little long. And yes, some of the scenes (particularly the early scenes) feel a little too fabricated. But for the most part, what we see is the truth, I suspect. The film really is about these amazingly typical American teens.
Plenty of questions, themes, and feelings arise during the course of the film. Ultimately all of the characters have qualities that you'll fall in love with. And chances are, you'll relive just an experience or two.
