Review of American Splendor (2003) by Matthew L — 19 Apr 2008
Captivating character study of real-life comic artist and hospital worker Harvey Pekar. The film intricately weaves interview footage, acted performances, cartoon art, and Pekar's own commentary. Harvey is a cautious eccentric, and as Paul Giamatti plays his character, the film takes us into how he forms and avoids certain relationships, while the real Harvey comments on their actual impact on him.
Likely to be timeless.
