Review of American Mary (2013) by Al M — 10 Feb 2013
Stylish, brutal, intelligent, and funny, American Mary fizzles a bit at the end instead of ramping up like it should have. Still, it represents just what indie horror is truly capable of. A disturbing exploration of how our bodies intersect with, constrain, or liberate our identities, American Mary concerns a young surgical student who devotes herself to surgical body augmentation to pay her bills.
A dark exploration of capitalism's underbelly and a rather unflattering depiction of higher education, American Mary alternates between sexy and revolting, funny and cringe-inducing, beautiful and horrifying.
A truly unique horror film, American Mary doesn't climax (pun intended) quite the way it should but instead goes disappointingly limp in its final moments.
