Review of American Gangster (2007) by David B — 19 Nov 2012
Interesting alternative to the Italian mob movies of past, but American Gangster obviously pays its tribute to such classics as The Godfather and Goofellas. Denzel Washington gives another career-defining performance as the violent and intelligent heroin dealer Frank Lucas.
As his nemesis, Russell Crowe plays honest, but unreliavle detective Richie Roberts. What's more interesting about the film is that Crowe and Washington do not meet until the film's powerful climax, when the two share the screen for the movie's best scene.
The movie is filled with great acting through out, with Washington and Crowe obvioulsy stealing the show. It is not only an ironic, graphic, and deep film, but it also serves to give character to one of the country's most notorious killers of all time.
