Review of All Is Lost (2013) by Kyle B — 11 Feb 2014
A spectacular and beautiful film. Going into this I was very hesitant because I kind of rolled my eyes and said "Another survival movie?". With movies like Life of Pi, Captain Phillips, and even Gravity, it felt the whole "survival" movie was a little over done these past few years.
But this one was unique and original. Probably 10 lines are spoken in this film which not even Cast Away accomplished. Redford never panics or starts talking to himself like characters in Gravity and Life of Pi but it worked with his character.
I would't say Redford was snubbed for an Oscar nomination like people have said because it was no stand out performance, but he still was good. The cinematography, sound, and directing were all well done here.
I found myself a few times kind of veering off thinking about other things because that is hard with a movie like this to keep someone's attention. Other than that, this has landed a slot in my Top 20 of 2013 and I recommend it.
