Review of Alexander the Last (2009) by James B — 23 Mar 2009
The movie is totally forgettable and completely self-congratulatory. The director and his friends are oh so pleased with themselves. For example, the film is called "Alexander the Last," but there is no Alexander.
It's just a cutesy title Swanberg came up with. But the quirkiness is also a cop out. It's much harder to come up with a title that resonates thematically, that both defines and deepens the ideas of the film.
Unable to rise to that challenge, Swanberg takes refuge in hipster humbug.
