Review of Ajami (2009) by Michael Y — 25 Feb 2010
Saw this as a part of the Austin Film Society "Children of Ibrahim" film series. The movie is practically an Arab/Israeli version of Gomorrah, although "Ajami" perhaps lacks some of the tighter editing and cinematography of the Italian Mafioso movie. In "Ajami", there are five separate stories giving a harsh portrayal of life in Jaffa (also known as "Ajami"), and these stories are connected together by a common set of events. Good performances by the cast of mostly non-professional actors.
The movie may have been slightly easier to follow if each story ("Chapter) title were labelled as was done in Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" and "Kill Bill". This is especially apparent for "Ajami", as the stories are not told in chronological order.
Nonetheless, this movie is definitely worth watching.
