Review of A Single Man (2009) by Harrison S — 01 Sep 2011
This story is a portrait of sadness, loneliness and love lost. Colin Firth plays an English Professor (George Falconer) living in California and dealing with the tragic death of his love in a less liberal time.
The suppressed sadness and mournfulness of George is poignant. Julianne Moore plays his friend and equally tortured next door neighbour, both roles are superbly acted. Stylistically the film is 60's chic, like a classic Chanel ad or an ad for some fancy Scotch with a touch of 60's SoCal.
You can almost smell the cigarettes in the shag carpet. Over all a really cool and moving movie.
