Review of A Serious Man (2009) by Juan C — 03 Jan 2011
The Coen Brothers unravel a mans life in a heavilly layered and uncertain way. Dream sequences, son, physics, music motif, drugs. Anything can happen and does.
Some set pieces are a level above No Country for Old Men, including the car crash and the ending. The barmitzva certainly has some Big Lebowski leanings thrown in there. The sequence involving Canada is quite memorable. There are so many red herrings that the Coen Brothers are having a great time laughing at the audience.
This is in every way a film that an Oscar winner has the freedom to make.
