Review of A Decade Under the Influence (2003) by Cli O — 16 Nov 2008
'The movie industry was a dying decaying whorehouse that had to be assaulted'. So says Paul Schrader in this awesome-ass documentary from the late Ted Demme that focuses on the greatest decade in film history: the seventies.
Amidst political scandal, social upheavals and more, young filmmaker of the seventies like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Sidney Lumet and Robert Altman tapped into the fury that audiences were feeling in movies like The French Connection.
Showcasing interviews with actors and directors, and bad-ass film clips, this is a doc that must be seen. Take it as a learning tool. Oh and as for the whole thing about the movie industry needing an assault: still does.
