Review of 2046 (2004) by Daniel K — 15 Jan 2008
With his followup to "In The Mood For Love" Wong Kar Wai has managed to capture the emotion in a differently profound and powerful way. He has also managed to confirm his rank as a true auter in every sence.
This film feels almost as if a Japanese co-production because of Takuya Kimura's role as the fantasy heroine in Tony Leung's book within the film. It feels as though Tony Leung has a fantasy to be this Japanese character who is in love and is in a mode of escapism.
The Melancholic score of Japanese Composer Shigeru Umebayashi (In The Mood For Love, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower, and many other chinese films) combined with the beautiful visuialisation created by Australian cinematographer Christopher Doyle make this more of an International production than just another piece of Hong Kong Cinema which is mostly plagued with cheesy action flicks.
