Review of Waking Sleeping Beauty (2009) by Eric A — 22 Feb 2011
Examining the one's most politely insular companies with a surprising amount of candor, "Waking Sleeping Beauty" may be most appealing to Disneyphiles and animation buffs. However, it's also a fascinating study of the uneasy alliance between creative and commercial types, the classic Type A vs. Type B duel that produces yet another example of great art forged through great adversity. It's also refreshing to see a doc eschew talking heads in favor of vastly more demonstrative archive footage (though not every doc could get away with this).
It's telling that the movie deals only with the rise and not the equally spectacular fall of second-wave Disney Animation. Does any studio have the balls to option "DisneyWar"--directed by Oliver Stone and starring, let's say, Michael Keaton as Eisner?
