Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by Gregory K — 08 Jan 2011
Hypnotizing! It's an arthouse viking action film. There's almost no dialog. If you combine Stanley Kubrick and Terrence Malik then throw in a little bit of Lars Von Trier... then you get Nicolas Winding Refn.
This is a very strange and mesmerizing film. Everything that happens is up for interpretation. It's completely open as to what it all means and I found it fascinating. Funny enough, the times where action and violence come into play are actually very effective.
More so than half the big Hollywood action films you see. The cinematography is beautiful and natural. Obviously, shot on the RED. I love Mads Mikkelsen. He literally doesn't say one word in this entire 90 minute film.
Not one. But his eye and actions say so much. Incredibly intense actor. Very, very cool film that I'm sure I'll re-visit later. Check it out if you have patience and are looking for something other than fast-paced, plot-driven movies!
