Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by The A — 15 Jan 2011
This is a brutally violent but atmospheric and haunting film that lingers in your memory long after its closure with its unforgettable disturbing images and mood. It's shocking, grim, almost apocalyptic in its depiction of a soulless beast who has no purpose or reason in life except to stay alive and obliterate anything that comes his way. This is less a Vikings movie than a meditation on Man as an animal and his place in nature. It is extremely slow paced, and almost nothing happens throughout and hardly much dialogue spoken but when something does happen it truly grabs your throat and grips it tight. It's all about the gruesome images and haunting sounds that stay with you. It's not a pleasant view, it's savage nightmare that is hopelessly grim but remains poetic nonetheless.
