Review of Helvetica (2007) by Dafydd M — 08 Jul 2008
I'm obsessed with the concept of "invisible media." Have been since high school and my McLuhan days. Those things we often take for granted... yet burn into our subconcious. The things that affect us without our knowledge. This documentary IS about the typeface. Nothing more, nothing less. However, this typeface has changed our society in ways we don't even understand.
By far the best documentary in the past few years... and among the bes period. Amazing use of visuals and music (mostly by indie progsters El Ten Eleven.) This film looks like one of those graphic art catalogs that permeate the better part of the late 20th century. Every frame is an amazing still photo, which drives home the theme that our environment is the governer of our philosophy and world view. Enough P.C. political faire that Moore and Spurlock churn out. This is a documentary on what REALLY matters!
