Review of Calvaire (2005) by Scott D — 21 Jul 2007
Very creepy and wholesomely disturbing entry in the tradition of tried-but-true "stranded in the middle of nowhere" films. Lead actor Laurent Lucas does an absolutely phenomenal job with his demanding, emotional role and the film, which for the most part has little if any musical score, is so steeped in bleakness it's depressing even before the real horror starts.
It's reliance on familiar conventions of other films of its type means the end product is a little derivative (particularly of the dinner sequence in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre) but even without these resemblances it is a very strong, disturbing, and very depressing film.
Props for the nihilistic ending.
