Review of Bugsy (1991) by Kevin S — 21 Mar 2008
The tag line on the movie poster is GLAMOUR WAS THE DISGUISE.
Well, it isn't disguised in this movie. It is a glorious piece of art, harkening back to the days of old Hollywood better than a lot of movies that try harder and achieve less. Bugsy has a great script on which to build the foundation of this great movie. I am not a huge fan of Barry Levinson, though he has made some movies I have liked. Bugsy, though, is one of my all time favourites. It isn't a gangster flick - it's a bio pic about a gangster. Get the difference? And what a bio pic! What complex characters, what flawless dialogue, what art direction, what costumes. It's a truly beautiful and fascinatinf film and I don't know (or care) what liberties have been taken with his life.
What a romance!
Ennio Morricone's score is one of his best and I'm not sure Annete Benine has ever been as beautiful (and she is always beautiful, dudes).
GLAMOUR is what it is all about.
