Review of Your Friends & Neighbors (1998) by Mike O — 27 Jan 2008
Like Labute's excellent debut, "In The Company Of Men", this is a dark and sardonically humorous dissection of relationships. In this case, an excruciatingly gruesome exposure of the treacheries and hidden cruelties of a group of so-called friends.
LaBute's stylised, dialogue heavy, theatrical approach works very well; attention is focussed on a script that cuts like a razor blade. Only a few stray lines fall a little flat (usually when they are too obvious). On the whole, the film is cruelly funny and deeply serious. One particular lengthy monologue is skin-crawlingly chilling in a way that no horror film can be.
Well worth seeing.
