Review of The Libertine (2004) by Adrienne B — 29 Jan 2010
The 2nd Earl of Rochester scandalised the court of Charles II. "He didn't resist temptation. He pursued it." Johnny Depp depicted the debauched depravity of this libertine so well that be the end of the film, you are left feeling violated and repulsed.
The tone of the film is dark and oppressive, a mood set well by lighting or lack thereof. While disgusted for most of the film, it is one of my favourites. It tells the story of a vile creature consumed by his demons, so effectively you feel tainted.
Depp at his best.
