Review of Stalag 17 (1953) by Sandy K — 03 Nov 2007
Billy Wilder is undoubtedly in my top 10 directors of all time. He has many classic films, but in my mind this is his finest achievement. First of all, you have William Holden playing what might be his greatest role throughout his career.
You have a great situational drama that unfolds behind the facade of a comical atmosphere, dealing with everything from the war going on in the world at the time to the simple notion of trust and respect, this film examines what it means to know the truth, and what you have to do sometimes to get that word out.
This is by far my favorite film concerning World War II.
