Review of Lincoln (2012) by Jim C — 28 Jul 2013
Lincoln is one of the most important historical dramas of 21st century cinema. It gives a fair treatment to a time in American history has too often fallen victim to glamorization and revisionism, and a man that has become deified.
Lincoln tells the story of the emancipation - the passage of the 13th amendment, not the war time proclamation. It is a process that is wrought with political intrigue and the passage of which was almost entirely possible by means of personal threats and outright bribery.
The extreme evil of slavery, therefore, was ultimately defeated through cunning and corruption, not honesty and steadfastness as is often suggested. Daniel Day Lewis also gives one of - if not THE - most accomplished performances in his career.
This is one powerful, respectful and courageous film.
