Review of The Arbor (2010) by Rob L — 04 Jun 2011
A moving successor to the working class realist cinema of Terence Davies and others, this depiction of the brief life of the playwright Andrea Dunbar and the trail of unhappiness that followed in her wake is a must-see.
Actors are brought in to enact the parts of the chief characters in this real life drama, unable to escape mentally or physically from the Buttershaw estate, one of Bradford's most troubled. That Dunbar failed to use her success to launch herself away from this pitiable environment is perhaps the most shocking thing about a film that's yet another notch in the debit column for Thatcher's Britain.
