Review of Leaving Las Vegas (1995) by James M — 29 Nov 2009
A love story for those too mature for the standard rom-coms and Romeo & Juliet comparables. Mike Figgis' style of direction might not be everybody's cup of tea, but his vision excellently portrays the scenes through the eyes of a drunk.
The movie gets unfair criticism, mostly because of Elisabeth Shue's hooker with a heart of gold character. But, as the movies seen through the eyes of Nicolas Cage's Ben, it's perfectly understandable and feasible.
Nicolas Cage deservedly won an Oscar, but Elisabeth Shue deserved her share of the spoils. The chemistry between the two of them make this one of the best (and also one of the more haunting) love stories of the 1990's.
