Review of Hula Girls (2006) by Felix H — 09 Apr 2008
Very Japanese in it's encouraging style, this is a nice, unambitious little story with some genuinely touching moments, and good performances by its cast. The realism of the film's setting in an increasing obsolete mining town raises Hula Girls above a soppy reworking of the Full Monty with grass skirts.
Although it tends towards melodrama a little at the end, its true story base and well intentioned warmth helps retain its poignancy.
