Review of Harlan County U.S.A. (1977) by John A — 17 May 2010
Brilliant. Perhaps the best documentary ever made. Simply amazing achievement. This film is smack-dab in the middle of a bitter fight of Kentucky coal miners in the early 70s as they fight to unionize, and are subjected to the full weight of the mining industry and the union itself: they risk what little they have, their families, their future, murders, and assassination.
This is a war film. This is a bloody history, an untold history of America itself: a war for power itself, literally. Absolutely brilliant.
