Review of Christine (2016) by Filipe C — 25 Oct 2016
A career high for both director Antonio Campos and actress Rebecca Hall, Christine is a perfectly nuanced documentation of mental illness at a time that the subject requires the most attention. Taking place in the '70s, this story inspired by true events follows the personal life of Sarasota reporter Christine Chubbuk leading up to her suicide on live television.
Campos' direction is subtle throughout, focusing more on details and less on sensationalism, and in doing so countering with finesse the narrative's sense of irony. In perfect sync with the filmmaker's vision is Hall-alongside a wonderfully effective supporting cast-who delivers a meticulous, heartbreaking and consistently compelling performance.
In Christine we find a film that has something relevant to say about feminism, the state of newscasting and depression.
