Review of Becket (1964) by Andrew H — 19 Dec 2007
Richard Burton. Peter O'Toole. An incredible story torn from the pages of history. Becket is pure cinema gold, and the recent dvd release makes this one worth owning for your collection. In some ways, it's a platonic love story between too straight men, which is a rare theme in narratives--but ultimately a powerful one.
Peter O'Toole is just off the wall in this movie, while Richard Burton's quiet intensity is the perfect counter-balance to O'Toole's manic presence. Much like Amadeus, Becket is captivating because of the silent yet powerful role of God within the film.
If you haven't caught this one before, you're in for a treat.
